Moray west wind farm secures marine optimisation system

22 November 2022 – Moray Offshore Windfarm (West) Limited has contracted Norwegian technology company Vissim AS to deliver a system designed to optimise marine operations at the Moray West offshore wind farm.

Under the contract, Vissim will provide its marine optimisation and planning software for offshore wind farms. The solution includes, among other things, certification and induction management; permit to work, vessel and personnel tracking within Vissim’s real-time decision support framework, including working weather windows and warning management options – delivered on Ocean Winds cloud infrastructure.

Marine optimisation systems enable windfarm developers to minimise construction and operating risk, and to lower costs and environmental footprint. They do this by supporting optimal use of personnel, vessels and other assets – taking external factors such as weather and wave height into account. Vissim systems have been designed to improve safety and cost-efficiency of all marine operations,

says Nicholas Dent, Managing Director – Global Wind, at Vissim.

Vissim’s contract is aligned with the construction period of the Moray West offshore wind farm. Vissim has not disclosed the value of the contract, which consists of start-up, support and monthly software license costs.

Moray West project is an offshore wind project off the coast of Scotland, in the Moray Firth region, developed by  Ocean Winds, a 50-50 joint venture between EDP Renewables and ENGIE. The installed capacity of 882MW will come from 60 wind turbines. The project aims to generate first power in 2024, with an operational life of over 25 years.

Vissim’s work on Moray West builds on the company’s ongoing performance at the adjacent Moray East windfarm. Vissim systems are now used at 3.5 GW of offshore windfarms in Scotland alone. The company has a proven track record of on-time and on–budget deliveries for Scottish windfarms, and a strong local supply chain to support operators.

As a developer we are constantly looking for ways to minimise project execution risk and to make our operations more cost-efficient. Our experience with Vissim’s marine optimisation system at Moray East demonstrated that it can be a valuable enabler for planning and carrying out safe and efficient marine operations. The result is reduced HSE risk, lower costs and lower environmental footprint. This of course benefits us as a developer – but it also benefits our teams, our contractors, and society as a whole.

says Magnus Currie, Ocean Winds’ Construction Services Package Manager.
