Mobile surveillance unit to monitor Malaysian coastline

7 June 2023 – Malaysian company AMP Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd (AMCOP) has contracted Norwegian technology company Vissim to provide its vessel traffic management system software to a new mobile surveillance unit (MSU) that will monitor and safeguard vessel traffic along the Malaysian coastline.

AMCOP will integrate Vissim’s vessel traffic management system software with its mobile surveillance unit (MSU), which is equipped with radar, AIS and compass. The land based MSU is designed to cater for all tropical weather conditions and can be deployed anytime and anywhere along the coastal area of Malaysia.

The MSU will eventually service the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).

Our vessel traffic management system digitizes the Malaysian coastline. This supports the main purpose of the MSU which is to improve maritime situational awareness as well as enhancing safety and security at sea. We are delighted to collaborate with AMCOP on this project, which is our first in Malaysia,” says Håvard Odden, Vissim’s senior vice president global sales .

Vissim, who will provide both the software and support to AMCOP, has not disclosed the value of the contract.

The core of Vissim’s technology is a specially designed software platform which through input from millions of data points creates situational awareness of the geographical area and increases understanding of maritime safety, security and efficiency. A coastal monitoring system can therefore monitor and optimise vessel traffic and logistics in coastal and harbour areas, plus detect and prevent illegal fishing, smuggling and piracy.

Vissim’s emphasis on innovation, research and development was the key to be selected amongst multiple vendors. The functionality of its software is well proven among several coastal authorities around the world, plus for the offshore energy industries, so it will be a good match for our MSU and our commitments to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency,” says Dato Seri Mustaffa, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of AMP Corporation (M) Sdn. Bhd.

Founded in 1997, AMCOP was set up to cater the maintenance of the Malaysian Sea Surveillance System (MSSS). Today, AMCOP provides key products for surveillance of coastal sovereignty, search and rescue operations, monitoring threat or piracy and prevention of vessel collision.

AMCOP will showcase the MSU at the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) in 2023.
