Pioneering Digitalization in Offshore Energy Operations

Introduction

Equinor, a global energy leader, has been at the forefront of digitalizing offshore energy operations in collaboration with VISSIM. Since 1997, this partnership has transformed the Norwegian Continental Shelf, setting a benchmark for operational efficiency, safety, and environmental stewardship in the offshore energy sector.

The Story

The journey began in 1997 when VISSIM revolutionized offshore operations by enabling the first offshore asset surveillance from an onshore control room. This pioneering step laid the groundwork for the digital transformation of the entire Norwegian shelf.

The project began with a focus on sea surveillance, marine and air logistics, and emergency response. In 2018, this collaboration reached a new milestone when Equinor entrusted Vissim with a groundbreaking contract to develop a state-of-the-art surveillance and marine coordination system.

Evolution of the System

The needs of offshore energy operations have evolved, and so have the capabilities of our solution. The new system isn’t just a surveillance tool; it’s a comprehensive solution encompassing subsea infrastructure monitoring, marine operations planning, 3D situational awareness, emergency handling, efficient audio communication networks, environmental surveillance, system governance and a versatile web portal and mobile application.

Today, Equinor’s operations, which span over 60 offshore assets, are a testament to this evolution. The system integrates more than 100 radars, Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), VHF radios, and oil spill detection systems. This expansive network has significantly enhanced Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards by providing automatic anti-collision features, optimizing the planning and execution of marine operations, and serving as an indispensable tool in emergency situations.

The benefits

The system plays a pivotal role in Equinor’s operations, contributing to significant operational cost savings, especially in the management of standby vessels and the planning and execution of marine logistics. Some of the key benefits are:

  1. Advanced Surveillance and Planning: The comprehensive system facilitates detailed asset monitoring and efficient marine operation planning.
  2. Enhanced situational awareness: Enhanced emergency response capabilities with realistic, 3D visualizations.
  3. Operational Efficiency: Smart use of weather forecasts and real time weather sensors enables optimized utilization of operational weather windows.
  4. Environmental Protection: The system’s environmental surveillance capabilities contribute to sustainable offshore operations.
  5. Innovative Communication: Seamless communication across offshore workers, vessels, and control rooms enhances collaboration and safety.
  6. Data Integration: A robust database supports comprehensive asset and marine planning, interfacing with existing corporate systems.
  7. System Governance: Comprehensive set of analytics tool to govern the effectiveness of the system sensors and components
