Ensuring Safety and Efficiency in the Caspian Sea - BP Marine Asset Protection System (BP MAPS)
Introduction
BP, a global energy leader, has been pioneering advancements in marine operations within the Caspian Sea. From their operations center in Baku, BP oversees marine activities for all of their 12 assets in this strategic region. Central to this operation is the BP Marine Asset Protection System (BP MAPS), powered by VISSIM’s state-of-the-art technology.
The Challenge
BP’s operations in Azerbaijan encompass numerous offshore assets and a supply vessel fleet. Thus, protecting high-value offshore assets against the risks of maritime collisions is crucial. BP faced challenges such as vessel dragging anchors near pipelines and unauthorized access to safety zones, while also needing to replace an outdated vessel tracking system with a technologically advanced, efficient solution.
The Solution
In 2015, VISSIM delivered a comprehensive system to BP, which was later expanded to include additional offshore installations and specialized ATEX radars for hazardous areas. BP Marine Asset Protection System (MAPS) is a sophisticated mix of hardware and software, operational in various BP locations.
We have installed radar and AIS surveillance on all platforms to enable the creation of a “Common Operating Picture (COP)” of all maritime activity within the Baku Control Centres. The COP is used to protect platforms by predicting possible collisions and establishing guard zones that can only be accessed by authorised vessels. It improves efficiency through the use of built in planning tools that avoid extensive waiting times for authorised supply vessels approaching the platforms. The system also provides VHF communications across the whole area enabling the Control centre to communicate directly with any approaching vessel in order to ensure maritime safety.
Lately, our contract has been extended for 5 more years showcasing the trust BP has in our solutions.
The benefits
The Marine Asset Protection System (MAPS) system has transformed BP’s marine operations in the Caspian Sea, centralizing surveillance and operational command into a sophisticated, unified system.
Some of the key benefits are:
- Enhanced Surveillance: Real-time monitoring of radar and AIS for all vessels, ensuring constant vigilance.
- Improved Safety: Early warning and collision avoidance systems protect designated assets and vessels.
- Operational Efficiency: Centralized surveillance and optimal vessel usage lead to significant cost savings.
- Advanced Communication: Streamlined coordination between offshore workers, vessels, and control rooms enhances operational effectiveness.
- Risk Mitigation: Effective management of vessel traffic reduces risks of platform collisions and subsea pipeline damage.
- Maritime Security: Strengthened offshore field security capabilities and responsive emergency functions.
- Environmental Protection: Continuous monitoring supports the protection of marine ecosystems.
