Technology
Here we will explain a little about the technologies we use to compose our systems.
Radar
Radars are "the eyes" of the system. Radar can see through darkness, fog, rain and snow. Vessels can turn of their AIS transponder, but they cannot hide from the radar.
Multisensor Tracking
Vessels may be tracked by several radars and report to several AIS or transponder basestations. The multisensor tracker merges information from these sources to a unified target.
AIS
An AIS transponder unit is a unit that receives GPS position from the vessels GPS antenna and broadcasts this together with the vessels name, MMSI number, speed, course, heading and other parameters on a special VHF channel. These small digital messages are then picked up by nearby vessels or AIS base stations.
DSC - Digital Selective Calling
There is a special VHF channel, channel 70, dedicated for digital DSC messages. These messages are used for calling other radios, much like a standard mobile telephone.
